Business Venture Ideas

A "venture" is an idea that you come up with that you could offer to make society better.

1) Candy Shop
- One of my favourite things to eat is candy. I love everything from chocolate to sour 5 cent candies. Therefore, one of my venture ideas would be to open a candy store in DT. Everyone loves candy, and opening a store on the campus would be a great idea. But, on the downside, there would be some high start up costs, and looking for a place to open this store would be difficult. Also, there is the Canada Food Health Guidline, which may stop this project, due to the high calories of the products. On the upside, this store would be offered to students and teachers of DT. Products would range from chocolate, and caramel to skittles, and starburst, to sour peaches and watermelon slices.

2) Sporting Good Store
- Many people at this school are athletic, and play on school teams. My second venture idea would to open a sporting good store within the walls of DT. Things like basketballs, soccer balls, cleats, jerseys, hockey sticks, and helmets would be sold at this store. Once again, the problem of high start-up costs, and locations would be difficult. And purchasing these goods would be extremely high, and prices would probably be the same as "Sport Chek," with some exceptions. There would be a promotion every other week promoting the sales of jerseys, hockey sticks, etc. For example, one week it may be a "buy one, get one free" week. And this store would be for everyone within DT.

  1. I think that the candy store would be a good venture idea because I know many students who go to 711 at break/lunch just to purchase these sweets. The only downside to having candy at school is that students will ultimately eat in classes. I think your idea for sporting goods at DT would be great except the target market is not that big. To be honest, I don't think it would be as profitable because there are also a lot of students who do not play sports.

  2. Candy store is a good idea since students cannot resist sweets. It would be a bit hard to stay around since the Canada Food Health Guideline will find a way to shut you down. Teachers probably will not approve of this idea because students will bring candy to class and leave package wraps or gum in the desk.

Sports Store is a good idea but not within the school. The school already sell certain things like jerseys or gym clothing to students. This idea would be better if you were to have it near the school rather than within the school.

  3. Many people seem to have a sweet tooth in our EMI class. Although it is a very profitable idea, the Ministry of Health will not approve of this idea.

The second idea I think would work outside of the school but not in it. Students here have limited income and would not be able to purchase the goods in the store. As for the promotions, I have a question regarding the "buy one, get one free" sale, would you want to run a business by having a sale like that every week?

  4. A candy store would be very popular among students and it could be very profitable, seeing as junk food is popular among school students.

A sports store however, could face some troubles as not a particularly large percentage of the school's students participate in sports activities, which means that there will not be alot of customers. Also, the typical student's budget might not be able to afford some of the things available in a sports shop.

  5. I think the candy store could work, people could convienently come to you and have some candy. However with all these health regulations, it might not work out at DT.

  6. The Candy Shop sounds sweet but were you thinking of having your own store within the school? Something like Trojan Market? Maybe you could try something like dried fruits as a substitute for candy because both are similar in the fact that they are both sweet. That’s one way you could get around the healthy food program the school is now into, it’s something to think about.

The Sporting Good Store might be more difficult for an in school setting because you’d have to think about where you’re going to stock or store your equipment and if students are willing to buy from you or just go to the actual store for more variety of equipment.

Overall, I think you have good ideas but having an actual store of your own within the school may be very difficult to start. Regardless though, good luck with your venture Deepak! :)

  7. Your first venture idea of selling candies is extremely appealing! I think selling candies inside school would attract a huge amount of customer base gaining your business a lot of profit. I understand there is a big competition with 7-Eleven, however why would people walk all the way to 7-eleven for candies they can just purchase right there at the school? Personally, I love candies so I would certainly be your regular customer! There is only one concern however. How are you going to get it to pass the school health policy?

You're second venture idea of selling sport goods is really interesting and seems like a business with a good potential market. One factor you'd have to highly consider however, is the high start-up cost. How are you going to purchase such variety of athletic goods at a price that will still leave you with a margin for profit? If you can manage the start-up cost and from there on, really advertise your business well...not just in school but on websites such as ebay and craigslist, then only you're business will be able to gain a high level of success.
